Stingrays - Advanced

At this level the children are working on all strokes equally. Focus is on continuous arm movement and kicking in freestyle and backstroke. They learn to take a breathe on every 3 arm strokes while still being able to use their arms effectively. The wiggly worm is performed with the arms directly at their sides, they learn to take a quick breathe while moving continuously here too. In breaststroke they learn to basic kick shape and how to flex their feet to get maximum propulsion. The breaststroke arms are introduced here and they learn the basic shape of the pull and stretch. Streamlining is refined at this level as they learn a backstroke push & glide and how to freestyle kick in a proper streamline.

Babies & Toddlers
DOLPHINS - STROKE CORRECTION, BEGINNER
    • These kids are now introduced to the bigger pools, and have their coach teaching from pool deck instead of in the water.
    • They start using flippers which helps to build their fitness as they start to swim longer distances. As their fitness increases, their ability to develop their strokes more effectively increases. They learn bilateral breathing in freestyle, in backstroke they learn to keep their hips high in the water, flutter kick continuously and straight arm recovery.  Using the flippers in wiggly worm they get a new feel for the undulation needed for butterfly. The focus is on keeping the feet turned out in breaststroke and getting comfortable enough to keep repeating that action on the kick while discovering the strength needed to propel forward. The breaststroke pull outwards rather than downwards or too far passed the hips is encouraged in breaststroke
    MARLINS - STROKE CORRECTION, INTERMEDIATE

At this level, all the strokes are properly refined. Hand entry in freestyle becomes important with focus placed on a strong pull with no crossing over under the water. In backstroke, hand entry is as important to create a strong pull here too. A streamlined butterfly kick is now brought in in order to introduce the pull down on the arm stroke. In breaststroke, the kick is continuously worked on and a timing drill is introduced for breathing. The children at this level are also learning standing dives and streamlining from diving in.

    SHARKS - STROKE CORRECTION, ADVANCED

Once the children are comfortable at this level, they will graduate into a group that is now swimming to train, rather than swimming to learn. So, we introduce drills here in order to refine each stroke even more. In freestyle they are learning the bent arm recovery as well as getting the most from each arm stroke in the Jackson drill. In backstroke they learn the bent arm under water pull action and how to do backstroke starts. The whip kick is brought in for breaststroke here as well as more timing drills. And in butterfly they learn to rotate the shoulders in the arm action by keeping the arms low on recovery. Importance is placed on effective underwater work in all strokes, and they learn how to do a racing dice. At this level the children are also learning the beginning of a tumble turn by getting comfortable with front flips.

ORCAS - STROKE CORRECTION, MINI SQUAD

Here the children are training in bigger groups, and learning how to get most effective in their strokes in order to start racing. There is an understanding of the drills required to perfect their strokes. In freestyle they now learn front sculling to get a better feel for the water, and are comfortable in their front flips. In backstroke the shoulder rotation becomes important and they can easily kick in a backstroke streamline without flippers. They learn the shoulder press action in butterfly and can kick on their back in streamline. In breaststroke there is a good understanding of the glide needed in order to perform the stroke in its most effective way.

Training group standards and progressing into new groups

Aquazone Swim Club’s training group structure is designed to allow progression over time from novice to highly experienced and skilled swimmers. Aquazone has set up some basic expectations for each group. Due to the structure of our program, moves from group to group are not carried out to accommodate more convenient practice times or other member-family preferences but are coaching decisions based on the group standards. The integrity and fairness of the structure is key to the success of our swimmers at all levels.

Group move-ups happen a twice per year:
    • Late September into early October
    • Late March into early April

        3. Health and Fitness – swimmers wanting to simply get fit and stay healthy.
        4. “Old dogs – swimmers who feel that as youngsters they were not taught properly how to swim, and who now want to be “old dogs learning new tricks”.
